What inspired you to start practising Ju-jitsu?
Having moved to London during the pandemic, I wanted to make the most of the city when it opened up again. Joining an LGBTQ+ sports club was my way of doing that, giving me the opportunity to try out a new skill and allowing me to form new friendships in an unfamiliar city. I had practised kickboxing in the past, so I specifically sought out a martial arts club but our new joiners come with a range of previous experience, plenty with none at all!
What do you like about Ishigaki?
Everyone at Ishigaki was incredibly friendly from the word 'go'. It's such a welcoming club that encourages everyone to be their best, from the newest white belts to the most accomplished black belts. And as fun as ju-jitsu itself is, Ishigaki more widely is a really sociable club, with a varied calendar of events for all interests, in London, Brighton and beyond.
What has been a highlight of your Ju-jitsu journey so far?
Marching in the London and Brighton Pride Parades last year were real highlights. It felt so rewarding to see and hear the crowd's reactions as we performed, and it was all the more satisfying to feel part of such a supportive group.
What would you say to anyone thinking of joining?
Come along and try it out! Our new joiners days are specifically tailored to give you a taste of ju-jitsu and you'll get the chance to see how friendly the club is.
