What inspired you to start practising ju-jitsu?
I used to practice another martial art - Brazilian Jujitsu - in one of London's clubs before, but really couldn't get into it because of the vibe. There was no sense of community and the requirements for progression were unclear. After a few months, I decided to look for something new - and found Ishigaki.
What do you like about Ishigaki?
That it's nothing like the other gyms I've been at. Most of us come from minority backgrounds, which helps creates a sense of community. Everyone's approachable and accepting - you can be a weirdo, you can be eccentric, you can be boring, you can be a wallflower. You can progress as quickly, or as slowly as you are able to, or want to. All are welcome. Apart from that, the teachers are top notch and always available to support and guide when needed.
What has been a highlight for your ju-jitsu journey so far?
This would have to be the erotic cake which got Suzanna the grand prize at the annual Ishigaki bakeoff. That, and the friends I have made for life.
What would you say to anyone thinking of joining?
Stop thinking and come to a free taster session. Then, join us for a drink after class. After that, come train with us again. Or not.
